What may be the root of low self-esteem?
Everyone has different factors that influence their sense of self-worth. Your sense of self-worth could abruptly change. Or perhaps you’ve struggled with low self-esteem for a time.
There are many aspects of life that can lower one’s self-esteem. For instance:
- being mistreated or bullied
- Experiencing racism or other forms of prejudice, stigma, or discrimination
- losing your job or having trouble finding work
- issues at work or in the classroom
- Obstacles to physical wellness
- Behavioral health issues
- Relationship issues, divorce, or separation
- issues with finances or housing
- concern for one’s looks and body image
- feeling under pressure to fulfill unjustified expectations, such as those that come from social media

Is a lack of self-worth a mental health issue?
Low self-esteem is not in and of itself a mental health issue. But there may be a connection between mental health and self-esteem.
Some symptoms of low self-esteem may also indicate a mental health issue. This is particularly true if they persist for a long period or have an impact on your daily life. For instance:

- placing unwarranted blame on oneself
- resenting oneself
- being concerned about my limitations
